SIREN — The Burnett County marijuana grow-operation case that began with a June search of a Siren Township property reached its final resolution on Friday, when Matthew Olson Sr. pleaded guilty to manufacturing THC and received a five-year deferred judgment — an agreement under which no conviction is entered against him unless he violates its terms.
Olson Sr., 51, of Siren, pleaded guilty in Burnett County Circuit Court case 2026CF000089 under an amended information filed October 12 charging him with manufacturing and delivering THC. The charge alleged that on or about June 25, 2026, in Burnett County, he manufactured THC in an amount of 2,500 to 10,000 grams, or more than 50 but not more than 200 plants. The remaining counts were dismissed and read in. Judge Melissia Mogen accepted the plea and the parties' joint recommendation of a five-year deferred judgment, with conditions including a drug and alcohol assessment and any recommended treatment, and no further crimes.
The distinction matters: in court, Judge Mogen first stated that a judgment of conviction would be entered, then corrected herself on the record. “The judgment is not entered,” she said. If Olson violates the agreement, prosecutors can ask the court to enter judgment on his guilty plea; the charge as read in court carried a maximum of a $25,000 fine, 12½ years in prison, or both. Of the $5,000 bond Olson posted, the court directed $150 to the district attorney's office and the assessment fee to be paid from bond, and will hold $750 of the bond for the five-year term, with the rest refunded.
The deferred agreement grew out of a problem with the search itself. Prosecutors told the court the State agreed to the deal after reviewing body camera footage, the search warrant and the law, concluding that a defense challenge to the warrant could succeed at least in part. Defense counsel said the warrant was written for Nicholas Contreras — Olson's nephew — who did not live at the residence. Olson told the court the marijuana was for personal use. His attorney said the outdoor grow was essentially finished — the plants had been mowed over and kept growing back — with a quantity of dried marijuana stored in a shed. Prosecutors noted Olson's prior record includes a 2015 criminal trespass to dwelling case.
Olson Sr.'s resolution was the last of the three cases arising from the investigation. According to DrydenWire's reporting of court records, Matthew Olson Jr., 30, of Siren, pleaded no contest and was sentenced on September 28, 2026, with a remaining charge dismissed as part of his plea agreement. Nicholas Contreras, 31, of Webster, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of delivering THC stemming from two controlled buys at a Siren bar and was sentenced in September 2026, according to the same reporting. Contreras is still facing drug-related charges in a separate Polk County court case; those charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent in that case unless and until he is proven guilty.
DrydenWire reported that the June 2026 search of the Siren Township property found large quantities of marijuana, more than 50 growing plants, drug paraphernalia and multiple firearms.

A $1,500 cash bond was set on September 23, with conditions that Sax not drive without a valid driver's license and that he obey all traffic laws. The bond was posted on September 28.
Sax was due in court for an initial appearance on October 28 but did not appear, according to the court record. Judge Melissia Mogen authorized a bench warrant carrying a $2,000 cash bond and ordered the previously posted $1,500 bond forfeited. The warrant was issued on October 29.

SIREN — A Siren woman was sentenced Thursday to two years of probation after pleading guilty to reduced charges in a drug case that began when deputies reported finding methamphetamine, fentanyl and other controlled substances inside a home where two young children lived.
Megan M. Kurkowski, 36, of Siren, pleaded guilty October 22 in Burnett County Circuit Court to two misdemeanor counts: possession of amphetamine/LSD/psilocin and possession of a controlled substance. Judge Melissia Mogen accepted the pleas and entered a judgment of conviction.
Kurkowski was originally charged March 3, 2026, in Burnett County case 2026CF000021, with felony possession of methamphetamine and felony possession of narcotic drugs. The complaint also charged felony neglecting a child — no harm, and a child under 6 years old — and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Every count carried an offense date of February 26, 2026.
Under the plea agreement, the two felony drug counts were amended down to the misdemeanors. The child-neglect felony and the paraphernalia count were dismissed but read in, meaning the court could consider them at sentencing even though Kurkowski was not convicted of them.
Mogen imposed two years of probation on each count, to run at the same time. The court also imposed jail time — three months on one count and 30 days on the other — but stayed both terms, so Kurkowski serves no jail time unless her probation is revoked. She received credit for seven days already served.
Her conditions require absolute sobriety and regular drug testing, and she must maintain gainful employment and provide a DNA sample. Court costs, fines, fees and surcharges totaled $886, which was paid in full from bond funds; she owes the court nothing further.
According to earlier reporting when the charges were filed, the case began February 26, 2026, when the Burnett County Sheriff's Office received information about a possible illegal firearms sale at a Siren residence. One of the occupants was on felony probation, prompting an Act 79 probation search of the home, and officers then executed a search warrant.
Inside the home, deputies reported finding methamphetamine, fentanyl, suspected mushrooms and other controlled substances. Two young children lived at the residence. The case is now closed, and Kurkowski's two-year probation runs from the October 22 sentencing.

A Burnett County judge revoked a Grantsburg man's probation Tuesday morning and sentenced him to seven months in the county jail, with credit for 113 days already served.
Jordan James Gaffney, 21, appeared before Judge Melissia Mogen for a sentencing hearing after revocation in case 2025CM000105. The court reviewed the revocation packet, the parties stipulated to 113 days of jail credit, and Gaffney addressed the court before sentence was imposed.
The state asked for nine months; the defense asked for six. The court revoked the probation and imposed seven months, with Huber release available only through a separate motion with proof of employment.
"I don't want to keep seeing you in orange in that seat," Judge Mogen told him. "I wanted to see you go to college, and I wanted to see you run and I wanted to see you get your degree. I still want that. Don't let go of that, Mr. Gaffney."
Gaffney pleaded guilty in October 2025 to resisting or obstructing an officer and received one year of probation with a withheld sentence, credit for 18 days in jail, and $500 in court costs, fines and fees. Counts of battery and possession of THC were dismissed but read in, along with a companion case.
His probation conditions included absolute sobriety and regular drug testing, with seven days of conditional jail ordered for a positive test. At a review hearing in July 2026, after his probation agent reported violations, the court ordered seven days in jail immediately.
Video of the judge's remarks from Tuesday's hearing is posted on the Burnett County Mugshots and Bookings Facebook page and on the Northwoods Bodycams YouTube channel.

Court live alerts are real phone notifications. Turn them on below and we will ask permission then — never before. The other switches are preferences that stay in this browser.

Burnett County Now is an independent local app. It is not affiliated with Burnett County government or any agency. In this app: weather and weather alerts are LIVE from the National Weather Service; Featured Videos are real, hand-picked Northwoods Bodycams uploads that play right here in the app (hosted on YouTube); the News Room publishes our own original stories from official sources; Bookings shows our published Burnett County posts; records, court cases, warrants, sheriff updates, and road conditions are LINK-ONLY to the official sources; court cases show verified outcomes from the court follow-up desk, each read against the official court record first.
We don't just post a mugshot. When we publish a booking, we follow that case all the way to its outcome — every case, including the smallest charges. Good endings or bad endings, it's public record, and we report what happened. If a case is dismissed or ends in an acquittal, we report that with the same prominence as a conviction. We don't decide the outcomes — the courts do. A charge is an allegation until a court decides it, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. We report the court's recorded outcome, whichever way it goes.
Burnett County Now is built and published by Tamco, a local media operation — part of a family of county information products.
Bookings verified against the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office roster and published to the Burnett County Now Page. This list shows the current month’s published bookings, rendered at build time — only posts that actually published appear here. Earlier months live in the Booking Archive. Charges are allegations; every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Every earlier month we have published is kept in the Booking Archive, grouped by month — nothing published is dropped, it just moves there as newer bookings arrive.
Search the people in the Burnett County bookings and court records published by this site. Type any part of a name, or use a filter — every result opens the person's profile: mugshot cards on top, the verified court record under them.
Records shown here are Burnett County bookings and court records published by this site. If someone is not listed, the official sources carry the complete picture — court records and the jail roster live at the source, and the statewide sex offender registry is the Wisconsin DOC lookup below.
WI DOC Sex Offender RegistryLINK-ONLYThe official booking photos from our published Burnett County posts, shown right here — no trip to Facebook needed. A booking whose photo is not on record does not appear in this gallery, and no photo is ever substituted for a missing one. Tap a photo to open the full booking — charges, dates, and the post link — in Bookings. Charges are allegations; every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Every booking we have ever published, grouped by the month it was booked. The current month stays live in Bookings and Mugshots; earlier months live here — pick a month to see its bookings. Entries are rendered at build time from our publishing ledger and our own published Facebook posts; a photo appears only when one is on record for that booking. The archive is part of the Everything tier and is open to everyone. Charges are allegations; every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
We are working on getting the county's warrant list. We have asked the Burnett County Sheriff's Office for its current warrant list, and we will publish it here as soon as it arrives — check back. Until then, this page is built from the county's own data — the most recent county run checked is the Burnett County Sheriff's Office — Current Inmates roster (report rpjlciol.x1) dated 11/6/2026 06:00:12, and it carries no warrant entries, so there is nothing to republish right now. The page rebuilds from the county's data on every site build: warrant information the county provides will appear here, with its date on it, and a name leaves this page when it leaves the county's data.
Press releases, public-help requests, and office information live on the Sheriff’s Office’s own channels. When the News Room reports a sheriff’s item, it reads the official source first-hand and cites it in the story.

The numbers that matter, right in the app — tap any number to call it. Every local number here was copied from that office's own official page, and the source is recorded in the app's directory data. Nothing in this app contacts emergency services for you — in an emergency, call 911 first.
Wisconsin's Sex Offender Registry is kept by the Department of Corrections. People convicted of certain offenses — generally those committed on or after December 25, 1993 — are required to register, and the registry is the public's official way to check.
What it is not: it is not a list of everyone ever arrested, and it is not a full criminal history. The Department of Corrections has not assessed the specific risk of any individual listed, and an address shown in the registry can be out of date.
How to search: on the official site you can search by name, or by location — a city, county, or ZIP code. The site asks you to accept its conditions of use first. The Registry Map in this app shows the Burnett County registrants from this same official registry — gathered from official public lookups, each record checked against the official lookup, and dated October 17, 2026. Registry information can change at any time — the official registry is always the authority. If you believe registry information is inaccurate, contact the Sex Offender Registry Program at 608-240-5830.
Get notified: the Department of Corrections offers free community notifications — an email when a registrant moves near an address you choose. Sign up on the official site, below.
The banners on Home and this page — and the Alerts page — show the National Weather Service alert types you pick: tornado, severe thunderstorm, winter weather, flood, heat, or everything else. Your choices save on this device only.
Your alerts appear here when you open the app. Push notifications arrive with the native app.
Find registered sex offenders near an address, on a map. Every pin and card comes from the official Wisconsin Department of Corrections sex offender registry (wistaysafe.gov), collected record by record from the official registry, and every card shows its source and the date of the data. Addresses change — registry addresses can be out of date, so verify at the official registry before relying on anything shown here; the official registry is always the authority. The DOC has not assessed the risk of any individual.
Pick a town above, or search an address — the map shows who is registered within the radius you choose.
Every record on this map comes from the official Wisconsin Department of Corrections sex offender registry (wistaysafe.gov), collected by individual public lookups of the official registry — never bought, never bulk-scraped — and each record is checked against the official registry before it appears here. (A bulk data extract has also been formally requested from the DOC; it is not the source of the records shown.) The data date is printed on every card; registry information can change at any time, and addresses change — verify at the official registry.
